Superoxide Dismutase 1 (SOD1): What It Is and How It Helps the Body

Book design is the art of incorporating the content, style, format, design, and sequence of the various components of a book into a coherent whole. In the words of Jan Tschichold, "Methods and rules that cannot be improved upon have been developed over centuries. To produce perfect books, these rules must be revived and applied." The front matter, or preliminaries, is the first section of a book and typically has the fewest pages.

Superoxide Dismutase 1 (SOD1): What It Is and How It Helps the Body

Superoxide Dismutase 1 (SOD1)
is a key metalloenzyme that serves as a crucial component of the body's antioxidant defense system. Its primary function involves neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS). This enzyme catalyzes the conversion of superoxide radicals into hydrogen peroxide and molecular oxygen, thereby interrupting chain reactions of oxidative stress. This mechanism makes SOD1 an essential element of cellular protection, particularly under conditions of increased free radical generation observed in most pathological processes.
Cellular protection and defense mechanisms:
  • Directly neutralizes superoxide radicals, shielding membrane lipids, structural proteins, and genetic material (DNA) from oxidative degradation
  • Limits the formation of derived reactive species, notably peroxynitrite
  • Provides immunomodulatory properties by downregulating the synthesis and release of pro-inflammatory cytokines
  • Protects mitochondrial structures, maintaining optimal energy production
  • Inhibits programmed cell death (apoptosis) triggered by excessive oxidative stress
Anti-aging and systemic benefits:
  • Mitigates radiation-induced cellular and tissue damage
  • Effectively neutralizes xenobiotic toxicity
  • Addresses physiological decline, including unintentional weight loss, muscle weakness, reduced mobility, and general cachexia
  • Prevents sarcopenia development and safeguards motor neurons from degeneration
Comprehensive tissue and organ support:
  • Neuroprotection: Aids in neural tissue repair for neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, ALS), neuropathic pain, and spinal cord injuries
  • Cardiovascular support: Helps manage ischemic heart disease, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and reperfusion injuries
  • Respiratory protection: Supports lung health in COPD, bronchial asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, and post-transplant complications
  • Gastrointestinal restoration: Promotes mucosa repair in peptic ulcer disease and inflammatory bowel disorders (Crohn's, ulcerative colitis)
  • Skin regeneration: Accelerates healing for chronic wounds, burns, photoaging, and inflammatory dermatological conditions
  • Metabolic and renal regulation: Protects kidneys in chronic kidney disease and regulates metabolism in diabetes and obesity
  • Ocular tissue protection: Defends against age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, uveitis, and dry eye syndrome
SOD1 finds extensive applications across diverse medical specialties. Beyond its core therapeutic uses, its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to maintain redox homeostasis make it a powerful tool in comprehensive treatment protocols. It is used to reduce tissue damage, accelerate regeneration, and improve overall organ function.

Prescribing Information & Administration

  • Pharmaceutical Form: Solution for intramuscular injection (colorless liquid; opalescence is acceptable). 10 ml glass bottle containing 30 million units of SOD1 (3 million units per dose).
  • Administration: Administered intramuscularly at a dose of 1 mL daily or every other day. A standard course lasts 2-4 weeks. The vial should be warmed to room temperature prior to use, administered slowly, and injection sites should be alternated.
  • Contraindications: Individual hypersensitivity, pregnancy and lactation, and children under 18 years of age.
  • Storage: Store in original packaging with a child-proof lid at 2-8 °C (in the refrigerator, but not near the freezer). Do not freeze.
  • Shelf Life: 3 years. After opening: 3 weeks (at temperatures below 25 °C) or 4 months (at 2-8 °C).
Mixtropin promotes the retention of calcium, phosphorus, and sodium in the body, enhancing bone tissue mineralization. With prolonged use, the preparation significantly increases bone mineral density, including in patients diagnosed with osteopenia.
Mixtropin has a complex effect on lipid, carbohydrate, and protein metabolism. It contributes to the formation of a harmonious physique not only through stimulation of skeletal muscle growth but also through activation of fat deposits. Visceral adipose tissue shows the greatest sensitivity to the action of the preparation.
In addition to enhancing lipolysis processes, Mixtropin limits the accumulation of triglycerides in adipocytes and increases the concentration of IGFBP3 (IGF-1 binding protein). The preparation positively affects the blood lipid spectrum, reducing LDL and apolipoprotein B levels. It restores the balance of plasma and intercellular fluid volumes.

Cellular protection and defense mechanisms:
Directly neutralizes superoxide radicals, shielding membrane lipids, structural proteins, and genetic material (DNA) from oxidative degradation
Limits the formation of derived reactive species, notably peroxynitrite
Promotes restoration of tendons, ligaments, and cartilage
Strengthens blood vessel walls
Accelerates wound and injury healing
Effects on metabolism:
Helps burn fat, especially in the abdominal area
Improves body composition not only through muscle growth but also by reducing fat deposits
Lowers "bad" cholesterol levels in the blood
Restores water balance in the body
With long-term use:
Increases muscle strength
Enhances overall performance
Improves heart function
Normalizes blood pressure
Immune support:
Mixtropin provides multifactorial support for the immune system, normalizing the functions of both innate and adaptive immunity. The biological effects of the preparation are realized through a combination of direct and indirect mechanisms, including increased production of IGF-1 and interaction with receptor complexes of immunocompetent cells.
Benefits for the brain:
Mixtropin is especially beneficial for older people as it helps maintain bone and muscle health, normalizes metabolism, and supports brain function. It:
Improves memory and cognitive functions
Promotes synaptic plasticity (improves the formation of new connections between neurons)
Protects nerve cells from age-related changes
Reduces neuroinflammation
Improves brain energy supply by maintaining mitochondrial function
Stimulates neurogenesis and viability of nerve cells
Regulates the work of neurotransmitters
Somatotropic hormone and IGF-1 are essential factors for maintaining memory, cognitive processes, and protecting nervous tissue from age-related changes. Mixtropin improves learning and memory abilities even in the presence of age-related cognitive impairments, prevents neurodegeneration, reduces inflammatory processes in nervous tissue, and stimulates proliferation and maintains the viability of neurons.
